This article is not a magical key that will solve your problems in a minute. So proceed only if you are patient enough to actually get better at it.

Now that you feel you’re serious about it, answer the following questions honestly:

  1. How many tasks do I take up on average each day?

  2. How many tasks are left incomplete by the end of the day on average?

  3. When am I the most active during the day?

  4. When am I the least active during the day?

  5. Am I doing my best to complete the tasks?

Answer them with utmost honesty. Done? Great, let’s move ahead.

Now, let’s analyse each point. By the end of this, I hope you’ll have a fair idea of what works for you and what changes you might need to be more effective. Before we move forward, understand that reaching your goal is not a one-day task. But it will happen—if you’re truly dedicated to making a shift. That’s a guarantee I’m willing to take.

Let’s begin with the first and second points, since they’re closely related. Being aware of the number of tasks we take up helps us realise whether our goals are realistic. I’m sure if you’ve reached this point, you’ve already explored other resources before this. So you may have heard about SMART goals. If you haven’t—don’t worry, here’s everything you need to know about SMART goals.” The key point here is “REALISTIC,” which is highly relevant.

Whatever goals we set, or tasks we plan to complete in a day, need to be achievable. I can’t travel to a foreign country in a minute—unless I have Doraemon in my life (sadly, I don’t). Similarly, completing 20 long and time-consuming tasks in a single day isn’t practical. So, it’s important to analyse the number of tasks you assign yourself each day and how many you typically leave unfinished. This helps you identify the gap and understand where adjustments are needed.

We often say, “Bahut kaam chhoot gaya.” But can we try to be more SPECIFIC? How many tasks exactly?Starting to feel a little clearer now? And if you already had this clarity, good for you! You’re already halfway there.

Let’s move to the third and fourth points—again, together, because they’re quite similar.

We eat when we’re hungry, not when we’re full, right? We drink when we’re thirsty, not just randomly. We understand our needs in those situations—so why not keep track of our energy too? Why? Because aligning tasks with our energy levels helps us be more productive.

If you’re sleepy and I ask you to solve a math problem—would that be logical? Probably not. But that’s exactly what many of us do with our to-do lists.Just like we’re told to post on Instagram at peak active times to get more engagement, we should plan our most important, focus-demanding tasks during our peak energy hours. That way, we complete them more effectively and with better results.

Now, the last point is possibly the most important. Asking yourself this question—“Am I doing my best?”—helps gauge how seriously you’re taking this entire process.

Without seriousness, I’m sorry, there are no surprise gifts of success. This has to come from you. We can guide you, but the ultimate source of motivation must be YOU.Take the guidance, get serious, and work toward becoming a more effective individual when it comes to time management.

Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.”
