Let us consider a situation: An individual wears a very colourful dress and has a jolly face with open arms and always laughing.

What will be your thoughts about that person? What would you like to think of that person?

While on the other hand there stands another person well suited with a very rigid face and spectacles with sincere expression. Now what is your impression about this person?

Both differs right!

This is how our appearance affects our judgment of a person.

The way they present themselves is how we create an image of the personal characteristics of a person. Now it is very important to be able to portray an image of oneself in various situations and how one wants to be seen. There are a few things to consider when we talk about appearance. It might constitute the dress that you choose to wear, the choice of shoes, perfumes, the combination of colors of your attire, and even the ornamental wearing of a person.

Let’s say if a fashion designer loses the touch of fashion in oneself, he/she might be seen as lacking the skills while if the same person is very thoughtful of the clothes that he/she wears and the way the person presents himself, it might help create a positive outlook of that person and affect the credibility of the same.

Along with these our appearance also includes a clean face, tidy hair and make-up, properly ironed dress. These are minute in nature but play an essential role in the overall make-up of a person. This is how we are seen and how one gets influenced by us.

Appearance is an umbrella term that has everything that helps in a primary image. Like grooming, body language, expressions and well-presented physical appearance. Appearance is a collective form of presenting oneself and thus carries overall representation of self.

These differ from situation to situation and person-to-person on how one should present oneself. One’s appearance must have an element that is the representation of one’s central trait. Along with this, the appearance must not be out of line of the event.

For instance, people like to see you in certain attire that goes with certain events or situations and that must be kept in mind when you dress. Now people might feel that one can wear anything that one wants. And this saying is true and is one’s own personal choice. But if one wishes to put influence on others and have an impact, one must take care of others’ demands or likes as well. In a formal meeting the superior and other individual would prefer formal attire irrespective of the allowance of semi-formal on other days. Or if individuals from a company or organization are representing themselves to another organization or firm, the company would like the employees to act in a proper decorum to present a well-formed image of oneself and their organization.
