Grooming is one aspect of appearance which act as a major factor in personality.
It consists of various factors including clothing and attire, hygiene and properly clean physical aspects (well combed hair, shaped nails, trimmed and properly shaped external hair, fresh and active face etc).
Clothing and attire:
This is the primary factor when we talk about appearance. The way we dress speaks a lot and helps form the primary image of self. Most people in a formal setting love decorum and a well-groomed individual.
While we talk about clothing and what to dress, it must be kept in mind that whatever we wear, it must show one’s own self. So, one should not dress in what he/she is not comfortable with. What we specifically refer to when we talk about clothing is maintaining the social requirements without neglecting one’s own personality. That means keeping in mind the comfort level of self.
It also depends on what impact we want on people. If we care less about influencing others or manifesting their needs, then it matters less about what we wear unless it’s comfortable for us. While on the other hand if it matters what we do and if we want some level of influence to be laid upon others, clothing and attire would contribute to have that first impression on others. It would help others to feel connected with you on their own level and people might look forward to listening and have a connection with you.
Points to consider when you dress:
-
What sort of external image I would like to represent in a given situation?
-
What image will fit with the event that I am attending?
-
Does it matter what I wear, and will that affect certain roles that I have to play in a particular situation?
-
Few questions depending on your Job profile. (Some organisations are happy for people to be casually dressed. This is particularly true in the technology industry. Other organisations may expect smarter attire, especially if you are representing the organisation at an external event.)
There is, however, a whole range of options from smart casual to smart business. This can be especially challenging for women, although it is also more obvious if men get it wrong, and wear/don’t wear a suit at the wrong times. It is important to be suitably dressed within expected limits.
Limits refer to the socially expected way which often might seem disregarded or facts that one should not care about much. But often these social ways help us to put some influence on people’s thoughts and the way we want them to act.
